Prof. Wayne Cristaudo, z którym rozmawia Zbigniew Janowski, ukazuje wielkie współczesne procesy kulturowe. Wszędzie w świecie zachodnim ideologia lewicowa staje się normą obowiązującą establishment akademicki, medialny i polityczny. Wiemy to, ale prof. Cristaudo dodaje do tego coś od siebie. Mówi, że impulsem napędzającym ten destruktywny proces jest odczuwany przez współczesnego człowieka ,,deficyt duchowości". Głód wartości w zlaicyzowanym, kapitalistycznym świecie zaspokaja więc toksyczna pożywka ideologii. Społeczeństwo rozwarstwia się na zbiorowość kosmopolitycznych profesjonalistów mogących żyć i pracować gdziekolwiek (everywheres) i ludzi związanych egzystencjalnie z własną kulturą, ojczyzną, narodem (somewheres). Niech nas nie zwodzi fakt, że prof. Cristaudo jest Australijczykiem, a Zbigniew Janowski pyta go o Australię, Kanadę i USA. Zjawiska, o których tu mowa, mają charakter globalny i obserwujemy je również na naszym, polskim podwórku.
Globalizacja ma zresztą swój rewers w postaci tendencji odwrotnych: modnych regionalizmów i ruchów separatystycznych. Prof. Andrzej Pisowicz, po raz kolejny na naszych łamach, przygląda się temu zjawisku na przykładzie Śląska. Przy całej sympatii dla Ślązaków, którą dzielimy z autorem, trudno jednak zachwycać się niektórymi świeżo nawróconymi na śląskość polskimi inteligentami, którzy głoszeniem ideologii ,,ślązakowskiej" rozładowują swoje prywatne resentymenty wobec Polski.
W tym numerze szczególnie godny polecenia wydaje się nam blok historyczny. Andrzej Nowak w pasjonującej analizie pierwszej wolnej elekcji, na której królem Polski wybrano Henryka Walezego, ukazuje w nowym świetle narodziny ustroju politycznego demokracji szlacheckiej. Arcyciekawy jest też artykuł Jakuba Polita o pierwszej próbie modernizacji (,,okcydentalizacji", jeśli tak można powiedzieć?) Chin w XX wieku, oglądanej przez pryzmat dziejów jednej, niezwykle wpływowej rodziny Songów.
W ramach naszych repetycji z literackiego dziedzictwa z przyjemnością publikujemy wiersze Gabriela D'Annunzio, w przekładzie Artura Stypuły i Olgi Płaszczewskiej. Ciekawa i dająca do myślenia jest aktualizująca interpretacja I księgi platońskiego "Państwa", pióra Stanisława Koguta. Z filozoficznym spokojem nie sposób za to czytać, nawet po tylu latach, relacji z obozu Birkenau, którą Zofia Kossak złożyła prezydentowi Władysławowi Raczkiewiczowi. W pewien sposób, choć trudno wytłumaczyć jak to się dzieje, ten wstrząsający dokument, który przypominają i opatrują komentarzem Krystyna Heska-Kwaśniewicz i Lucyna Sadzikowska, koresponduje z naszymi obawami o to, że totalitarnie piekło w jakiejś nowej-starej postaci czeka nas na końcu obecnej epoki liberalnej.
Naszych czytelników zaskoczy zapewne osobiste wspomnienie prof. Kazimierza Nowosielskiego o zmarłej niedawno Marii Janion. Nie zadowoli ono ani krytyków, ani żarliwych wyznawców tej dziwnej osoby. Ale może sprowokuje nas wreszcie do uczciwego, pogłębionego rozrachunku z urzędową humanistyką PRL-u i III RP?
Zanim jednak do tego dojdziemy, przeczytajmy uważnie wszystkie teksty obecnego numeru. Zaczynając od początku, czyli od nowych wierszy Krzysztofa Koehlera.
